The name "Tuanaki" originates from a real island that once existed but collapsed and sank into the sea during an earthquake between 1842 and 1843. In this animation, Tuanaki symbolizes the fearless human spirit of exploration and the courage to confront the unknown.
Humans have an innate desire to explore the unknown, yet with every step into the void, they uncover even deeper mysteries of the world. This animation tells the story of an explorer who embarks alone on an endless journey in search of Tuanaki, only to become trapped in another dimension of reality.
Eventually, the explorer succumbs to hallucinations, fear, confusion, and anxiety, consumed by illusions born from the collapse of his own identity.
Yet even in the depths of disorientation and breakdown, his footsteps carry the ember of humanity’s will to explore. At the cost of himself, he touches the outer limits of human perception—like the pioneers who may never return, but whose paths illuminate the way for those who follow. His journey sustains the possibility of reinterpreting both the self and the world—just as a sunken island may still surface in memory, living on through language, and being remembered by those who dare to look.
